How long should brakes last?
There is no real set time frame or mileage. Life expectancy of brake pads is in-between 25,000-65,000 miles. Generally, replacement of pads is right around 40,000 miles. Your driving pattern determines a lot of pad life. Brakes convert motion into heat through friction, so the more they’re applied and the harder they are applied the faster the pad lining and rotors wear out.
Why does my car shake when I press on the brake pedal?
Usually when you feel shaking as you are pressing on the brake pedal is because the brake rotors are warped. The rotors get pressed by the brake pad to help slow your vehicle down, and if the rotors are uneven this can cause a vibrating feeling. Tires can also cause vibrations and it is always important to have each inspected by a trusted automotive service center.
Why do brakes squeak?
Common issues for brake squeaks or squeals can be from worn brake pads, lack of lubrication, maybe damaged brake pad clips or even moisture build up in the braking system.
How do I know if my rotors need replacing?
You may notice longer stopping time, steering wheel vibrates when you brake or pulsates. You may notice scratched, scored or grooved rotors. And of course, if the rotors get to thin, this can be determined from your trusted automotive service center, where they can measure the thickness remaining on the rotors.
What are some of the braking components?
Some of the common brake components include master cylinder, which is the heart of the system, brake calipers, the brake pads, brake rotors and you also have brake hoses. They all have an important part in stopping your vehicle and keeping you safe while driving. The master cylinders force brake fluid to the calipers when pressing the brake pedal. The brake fluid then extends the caliper piston, and the piston applies pressure to the brake pad and in return the brake pad applies pressure to the rotor to slow and stop the vehicle.
